As the rains subside and Zambia’s landscapes transition into the dry season, the wilderness once again opens its doors to eager travelers. National parks are becoming more accessible, and with them, the promise of extraordinary wildlife encounters. Our first mobile safari of the season took us from Lusaka to the vast Kafue National Park. This set the tone for an exciting year of adventure.

Our Trip

Our safari began with an early morning departure from Lusaka, heading west towards Kafue National Park. This park is one of Africa’s largest and most diverse wilderness areas. After hours on the road, we arrived at our home for the next three nights—Mayukuyuku Bush Camp. It is a picturesque riverside retreat that blends comfort with the raw beauty of nature.

Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters

Kafue National Park did not disappoint. Our game drives and camp experiences were brimming with thrilling wildlife sightings. We encountered a breeding herd of elephants, complete with playful calves, moving gracefully across the plains. Many elephants ventured close to our camp. This provided an intimate and humbling experience. The thrill of the night came when lions roamed through the camp, their powerful presence a reminder of nature’s untamed spirit.

Other remarkable sightings included a stealthy leopard emerging from the thickets. We saw elusive roan antelopes grazing in the distance. There were also large herds of kudus, impalas, and puku scattered across the savannah. Kafue’s diverse antelope species provided endless photographic opportunities. Meanwhile, nocturnal mammals added a mysterious charm to our evenings, their calls echoing through the night.

A Birder’s Paradise

Our bird checklist was a true delight, submitted enthusiastically to eBird. Among the standout sightings were the regal Gray Crowned Cranes wading through the wetlands. We saw the charismatic Trumpeter Hornbills calling from the treetops. We also saw the agile Wire-tailed Swallows darting across the sky. Kafue is also home to unique species such as the Zambian Barbet, an endemic treasure for bird lovers. The park’s rich avian diversity made every moment an opportunity to spot and appreciate new species.

The Best Moments of the Safari Experience

Beyond the incredible wildlife, our safari was enriched by the little luxuries that make a journey into the wild even more special. Early mornings began with the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee and tea. This set the perfect tone for an exciting day ahead. Bush breakfasts immersed us in nature’s tranquility. Picnic lunches in the park allowed us to soak in the breathtaking landscapes. Evenings were capped off with delicious dinners by the campfire. Here, stories of the day’s adventures were shared under the starlit African sky.

Why Book Now?

With the wet season behind us, now is the perfect time to embark on a safari. The roads are drying up, making even the most remote corners of the park accessible. Wildlife is becoming more concentrated, increasing the chances of unforgettable sightings.
